Amboli is a small hill station situated in the southern region of Maharashtra and located close to the coastal highlands of Goa. It is, in fact, the last hill station in the state of Maharashtra past which the territory of Goa starts. Aptly set in the Sahyadri Range of Western Ghats, it is one of the handful of hills that offer commanding views of Konkan Coast where meet the vast Arabian Sea with the Indian shore. It has a thick blanket of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, which is a result of the climatic conditions. The place can be easily put amongst the places in Maharashtra receiving heaviest rainfall. Every monsoon brings heavy rainfall in the region not just cleansing the entire surrounding but also filling the lakes, water streams, and waterfalls with fresh batches of rain water. It is during monsoon and the post monsoon when the place is in bliss, attracting large enough masses of tourists and backpackers. However, compared to other hill stations in Maharashtra, the town is relatively unexplored and less popular. The good thing is with the growth of ecotourism in India and also for the fact that the town is in proximity to cities of Goa and Belgaum an increasing number of tourists are now visiting the place. The increased number of hotels in Amboli is a testimony of the fact. Besides, there are also improvements in tour package bookings, transportation, and other tourism related industries.
Due to its pleasant weather and high altitude, the place offers a perfect escapade from the hot and humid cities situated on the plains. However, during monsoon one has to be careful, especially while trekking as the trails can be slippery. Plus, the place is filled with leeches. The place is an excellent destination for avid trekker. It houses a large array of trekking trails ranging from those that are ideal for beginners to the difficult ones that will challenge the best out of an experienced trekker. Besides, even if you are not a serious trekker, the place has some lovely walks that will liven up your heart and body.
All points of interest are well-connected to each other and taking rickshaws and horses is perhaps the best way to get into the tourist spots. You will find a plenty of rickshaws, taxis, horses, etc. running here and there. Visiting and discovering all major tourist destinations would not take more than a day, however, you will often see tourists expanding their stay because of the laid-back and simple vibe of the town. While you are in the town, take out some time to visit the Hiranyakeshi Temple. It is about 5 k.m. from the main bus stand and lies on the way towards Belgaum. It is a revered temple and the place where the Hiranyakeshi River originates. Close to the river source you will also find ancient caves, which according to locals can be explored. The road is in poor condition and you might face a little difficulty, but it is motorable.
There are certain other good tourist attractions that you can visit. Head to the place on next vacation and pick from the best budget hotels in Amboli. Although, there are not too many hotels, but you will find a good range of options to pick from.
