There are many types and breed of dogs available for families but the Golden Retriever breed is at the top of the list. Their popularity stems from their personality as a fun, loyal and easy to train dog. Initially the Golden was a hunting dog. They were bred and trained to hunt in all types of weather from the hottest to the coldest and in dry and wet conditions. Since those beginnings they have now also become a popular breed for families and various law enforcement agencies.

The modern Golden Retriever is easy to recognize because of its large and powerful stature. People love this dog because it is not only beautiful but has as gentle personality. They have a full beautiful coat that gives them the look of royalty. Originally known as the Golden Flatcoat, the modern Golden Retriever is a result of crossing a Tweed Water Spaniel with a Flat Coated Retriever.

The dog’s bloodlines were further developed by the introduction of Labrador, Irish Setter, and Bloodhound stock to produce a gentle and excellent hunting companion with a keen sense of smell and the ability to retrieve game birds from both land and water. Other traits that make the Golden so popular are that it is easily trainable and has an affectionate disposition. Another purpose for this dog is to be trained to help people with disabilities.

The Golden’s looks is different from most other dogs with its large head, mouth and ears and its full golden coat. A typical Golden will have a height of between 20 -24 inches (51-61 cm) and weigh between 55 – 80 pounds (25 – 36 kg). While their life expectancy is 10 – 12 years, many live a much longer and active life. Even though they are quite large, their gentle personality and distinctive face makes people feel comfortable around them.

These gentle dogs are so popular because they make a great family pet that will play with you and the children for as long as you can last. This is particularly true if you want to play their favorite game – throw and retrieve. This play time is important to their health (and probably won’t hurt you either). They also enjoy the quite time inside with the family and will lounge next to their master for hours.

If you are looking for a dog that is easy to train, loyal, and affectionate, look no further – the beautiful Golden Retriever breed is the perfect dog for you and your family.
