Construction Waste Management – Key Concepts


Construction waste management encompasses ways to recycle and reuse waste material left over at construction sites. Some of this waste is inorganic like paper, plastics and some is organic like leaves, saw dust etc. All this waste material is left at construction sites resulting in the formation of dumps or landfills. Construction waste management is an attempt to sustain the environment by conserving energy and saving resources.

Reuse and recycling of salvaged building materials reduces the waste disposal costs and the money spent on purchase of building material. As a property owner or developer, you can take the following steps in order to reduce construction waste:

• Establish requirements for waste reduction: Keep the idea of waste reduction in your mind from the beginning of the construction process. Adopt it at all levels from design, construction, installation and possession.

• Set goals: Choose a team of qualified professionals experienced in environmentally sound design and construction practices. Identify the building materials which can be reused.

• Monitor and support the program: Appoint contractors for submitting waste management plan and progress reports to you on a daily or weekly basis depending on the amount of waste disposal. Identify a location for storing recyclables on your construction site.

Construction has been taking place at a lot places these days. This has led to the increase of construction waste adding to the disposal system a huge amount of organic and inorganic waste. There are three strategies to reduce the waste left behind at a construction site and this is the order of preference:

1. Reduce: Start by using limited material. Identify potential wastes early in the design process.

2. Reuse: After learning how to prevent waste, you need to identify the salvaged materials which can be reused on other projects or donated.

3. Recycle: Lastly, take a look at all the salvaged material. Identify the material that can be recycled and begin the recycling process.
