All industrial companies need to conduct parts cleaning. During natural machining processes, the machines into which companies have invested thousands of dollars become contaminated. These processes give off byproducts like dirt and grease while natural contaminants like dust can accumulate when the machine is not maintained. Cleaning these machines and their parts is therefore a way for companies to ensure that existing machines are able to continue to complete its necessary activities. The type of process that is used to clean these machines will differ based on the type of machine that is being cleaned and the type of contaminants that need to be removed, but degreasers are the most commonly used product.
Degreasers are substances that are used in parts cleaning due to the substance’s ability to remove problematic contaminants. The Department of Defense developed its own classification system to identify the military-grade cleaning substances: MIL-PRF-680. This classification system actually replaced an earlier classification system called P-D-680 that was broken down into three types. Each type was differentiated based on its flash point, which is the lowest point at which a substance will vaporize into the air in the form of an ignitable gas. However, P-D-680 substances contained a number of harmful ingredients that were responsible for generating toxic waste and caused air pollution. These substances were also overall more harmful to the individuals who used them because they had a much lower flash point. Military organizations that used P-D-680 were therefore harming employees by exposing them to a toxic environment with flammable chemicals. Substances that are classified as MIL-PRF-680 are not only less flammable but are also safer for industrial use.
Once the MIL-PRF-680 system was introduced, buyers were finally able to differentiate between various substances and find the solution that met their needs. Solvents are designated as one of four types based on their flash point. The four types are described as:
- Type I: These particular solvents are substances that have a flash point between 38 and 60 degrees Celsius. These solvents also are characterized by a low, non-residual scent.
- Type II: These degreasers have a flash point between 61 and 92 degrees Celsius. As with Type I substances, Type II solvents carry a low, non-residual odor.
- Type III: These solvents are best for machines that operate at very high temperatures, as they have a flash point between 93 and 116 degrees Celsius. Type III degreasers boast a low, non-residual odor.
- Type IV: These chemicals have the same flash point range as Type II solvents, between 61-92 degrees Celsius. Unlike Type II solvents, Type IV degreasers have a citrus, non-residual odor.
Military organizations and companies that use MIL-PRF-680 solvents can also feel that they are making an environmentally friendly decision. All of these solvents have been certified eco-friendly by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This certification indicates that each solvent has been checked by the EPA to make sure that it leaves behind less inorganic residue, and that it contains a low amount of carcinogenic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
