Know More About Catalytic Converter


Cars and other vehicles are very rampant nowadays especially in large and developed countries. As these run through fuel combustion, these produce toxic emissions which further pollute the environment. The more cars or vehicles running every hour of the day, the more pollution these cars create which is harmful to one’s health. That is why many governing bodies continuously passing on different laws relative to clean-air act. Through the years, the car makers on the other hand are also continuously searching to improve the car engines as well as the fuel systems to address the issue. In 1975, catalytic converter was created to help reduce the toxicity of the emissions of engine combustion.

Catalytic converter becomes popular not only on cars but to any other vehicle that emits toxic air. In fact even power generator sets are also using this device. This converts the harmful pollutants to a lesser toxicity. Once this device had been installed in the exhaust system of a vehicle or equipment, the emissions will have reduced toxic. Just to make it clear, this device does not totally clean the air that will be emitted out but only reduce the harmful pollutants.

There are two types of a catalytic converter introduced in the market. One is the two-way converter and the other one is the three-way converter. The two-way converter is being used on diesel engines. Although this was used on gasoline engine but superseded by three-way converter because of its inability to control nitrous oxide.

A catalytic converter works through a catalyst substance that has the capability of converting chemical compounds. The two-way converter performs in two ways. One is the oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Another way which is simultaneously being done by the first is the oxidation of unburned hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water. Actually even the partially burned fuel is being handled by this process. The three-way converter on the other hand works in three ways simultaneously. This reduces the nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen, while doing the oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and oxidation of unburned hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water.

Carbon dioxide is the one being emitted through fuel combustion. So a catalytic converter actually reduces or converts the carbon dioxide to a lesser toxic chemical compound which further reduces the harmful effects in the environment.
