Are Lincoln Logs a Hobby?

Do you remember playing with Lincoln Logs when you were a child? These children toys have been around for years and continue to be present in our daily lives. One of my favorite activities after the cabin was built was to take one of the green roof slats and place it on one of the smallest logs using it as a catapult to launch small logs at the cabin as projectiles. Fond memories were made with such a simple toy.

Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright in 1916. He was the son of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1918 they were available for purchase. The logs have a notched end that will fit together to build the log structures. The original logs were made of 100% wood and were available in colors for specific items, i.e. roof pieces were green. The design of the logs were inspired from the basement of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The name was derived from the instructions that were sent with each set on how to build the log cabin of Abraham Lincoln.

There are some sets that were constructed out of plastic with the advent of the plastic injection molding machines and the popularity of this new raw material. However in the 1990’s the toys were again made out of the vintage wood and continue to be made of wood today.

These little log sets have been found all over the world. There is a high probability that you had a set and if you did not, then someone among your friends did. There have been over 100 million sets sold. The fun thing about these little logs is they will fit together with ease and create as many structures as you can imagine. These toys are also a great way for small children to develop their fine motor skills. They were so popular that they were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999. As stated earlier, the set comes with instructions. This allows the children to work together to achieve the goal of building the structures by following simple visual instructions. This allows for experiences that will foster skills to be used later in life.

If you think about toys today they are always changing. You often find yourself asking “What is the hottest toy on the market?”. While this question is very relevant to marketing staff at toy manufactures, there will always be toys that are the “old standbys” and will continue to provide hours of entertainment for children. The Lincoln Logs fall into this category. They have been around for almost 100 years and they are still one of the best sellers in the market place. Thus I vote for these toys to fall into the Hobby category.

One definition of a Hobby is a regular activity done in one’s leisure time. Since the Lincoln Logs have been purchased and played with over the years they fall into this category.
