Candle Making Made Safe

As a hobby, candle making can be easy and fun, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. Having the correct materials for candle making, the appropriate safety equipment, and a working knowledge of the craft is an important first step.

Many people don’t realize that there is a risk of injury when making homemade candles, but there certainly are a few. First and foremost, when dealing with hot wax there is a risk of fires and of burns. Also, essential oils and fragrances, used to give your homemade candles their scent, can often irritate the skin or the eyes and, in some cases, may even be toxic.

When making homemade candles, the first step is to prepare your workspace for maximum safety. Cover the work area with newspapers or tarps, keep everything neat and organized, have additional newspapers or towels available in case of a spill, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and remember to organize all of your tools and materials and have them ready for use before starting the process. Of course, be sure to make sure that little hands, feet, and paws, cannot access the space. If you are making homemade candles with your child, be sure to be extra careful.

Once you begin the process of making your homemade candles, work slowly. Be sure to carefully follow any manuals and instruction guides you may be using and always go slow. When you rush, mistakes will happen and with mistakes, you run the risk of accidents.

Work carefully with all essential oils and fragrances, as many are toxic. Be sure to immediately clean up any spills and wash your hands after all contact with the skin. Also be careful using any dyes as they will likely stain clothing and surfaces. It is a good idea to wear a smock or clothing that you are willing to ruin.

When melting your wax, also take great care. At high temperatures wax can cause serious burns. Be sure to pay careful attention to the temperature of your wax by keeping a thermometer handy at all times and never leave wax unattended, even for a moment.

If you follow these simple rules, you can create homemade candles safely and with very little effort.
