Video footage online shows horrified commuters capturing the moment water spilled down the steps of a subway station. Tropical Storm Fay on Friday made landfall near Atlantic city, New Jersey, with heavy rainfall and gusty winds, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The centre of the storm is expected to reach New York today with maximum sustained winds of 50mph.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday: “We expect some pretty heavy winds, and we need people to be ready for that, and some flash flooding in certain parts of the city.

“If you were going to go out tonight, instead order in and keep helping our restaurant community.”

President Donald Trump has said the storm is being monitored by the Miami-based Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and said it can help anyone who needs assistance.

He told reporters: “We’re fully prepared. FEMA’s ready in case it’s bad. Shouldn’t be too bad, but you never know.”

It comes as a campaign rally for President Trump set for Saturday in New Hampshire has been postponed by a “week or two” because of a tropical storm off the East Coast, White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany told reporters on Friday.

The rally had been set for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Saturday.

Tropical Storm Fay was expected to sweep across the heavily populated northeastern United States on Friday, bringing moderate to heavy rains and the potential for some flooding, the National Weather Service said.

The storm is expected to bring rain and gusty winds to southern New Hampshire early on Saturday, but will have moved out of the area by the afternoon, National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Peterson said.

Republican Trump has held a series of events recently with large crowds despite warnings from public health professionals about the dangers of big gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a fellow Republican, said earlier this week he planned to greet Trump at the airport but would not attend the rally becauseof the number of people expected.

He said: “I’m not going to put myself in the middle of a crowd of thousands of people… as the governor, I try to be extra cautious for myself and my family.”
