A new documentary short will highlight the problem of plastic waste in the oceans. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this film will look at plastic as if it is a treasured part of sea life, in a bid to bring awareness to plastic pollution.

Titled “Life Below Water: The Arrival of a New Species,” the short film is funded by Google and created by Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P) points out the importance of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The film debuted on YouTube and has several teasers spots available to view.

In the film, describing ocean plastic, Freeman says: “The creatures in this fascinating species do not have brains, teeth or even simple nervous systems, but miraculously they can travel for hundreds of miles and live to be over a thousand years old.”

“As the ocean is an unpredictable actor, Chris donated a few shots of other oceans to fill in a few spaces we couldn’t capture in Belize,” said Kate Baynham, associate creative director at GS&P. “We also worked with colorist Greg Reese at (visual effects company) a52 to create the seamless picture.” The film will be featured at the UN General Assembly, the Tribeca Film Festival and Advertising Week 2020.

“Ocean pollution has an impact on the food we eat, the air we breathe, land and wildlife across the globe, and our overall health and wellness. Not to mention the wide range of social and economic burdens that will grow steadily as the problem gets worse. Every part of our life is affected by the health of our oceans, so ignoring the problem will prove more detrimental than we can imagine,” said Baynham.
