Sherwood Boehlert, Congressman who helped curb acid rain, dies at 84

Republican Sherwood Boehlert represented central New York in Congress from 1983 to 2007.

An Upstate New York Congressman who helped protect the Adirondacks from acid rain has died. Sherwood Boehlert was a moderate Republican from Utica. He was 84.

Boehlert represented central New York in the House of Representatives for almost 25 years until he stepped down in 2007. He helped write a part of the 1990 Clean Air Act that forced coal-fired power plants in the Midwest to reduce pollution that caused acid rain in the Adirondacks.

In a statement, U.S. Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said he and Boehlert had a friendship that “transcended partisanship.”
