Earthquake in Indonesia triggers no tsunami: agency

JAKARTA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — An earthquake that has hit Bitung city in Indonesia’s eastern province of North Sulawesi was recorded at 5.7 magnitude, triggering no tsunami, the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said on Monday.

The epicenter of the shallow quake was located 122 km to the southeast of Bitung, the agency said, adding that the quake occurred at 7:34 p.m. local time on Monday due to an activity of a plate in the Maluku Sea.

“Results of an analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism,” the agency’s head of earthquake and tsunami center Bambang Setiyo Prayitno said in a statement.

So far, there have been no reports of damages caused by the earthquake, he added.

As of 8:06 local time, there had been two aftershocks, said the official. Enditem
