Marine Highway Program Puts Species At Risk, Group Says


By Juan Carlos Rodriguez (October 12, 2021, 9:35 PM EDT) — The U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration’s program to expand the use of U.S. waterways for commercial transportation has not undergone the required review to make sure it won’t jeopardize endangered species, a green group said in a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Some projects funded through the America’s Marine Highway Program are in habitats for animals and plants that are protected by the Endangered Species Act, and more projects could be implicated as the program grows, the Center for Biological Diversity said in its complaint filed in a Virginia federal court.

But the Marine Administration has failed to initiate and complete consultations…
