SA’s abandoned mines to become hydroelectric energy sites


JOHANNESBURG – About 6,000 abandoned mines in South Africa have the potential to become hydroelectric energy sites.

A feasibility study is being conducted by Swedish, German and local firms.

This could hold some solutions to the country’s energy crisis.

The capital costs to convert a depleted mine will be less than constructing a new above-ground hydroelectric plant.
