Year Ender 2021: Major natural disasters this year in India – India Today

When every nation is battling through a pandemic, natural disasters are another difficulty. And ironically, when people wanted fewer problems, more natural disasters occurred this year. Climate change-induced natural disasters like floods and cyclones have also been making lives miserable. All these natural disasters are life-threatening. The total

number of disasters has increased, which is driven by climate change.

Extreme weather conditions have dramatically increased in the past 20 years and have potentially caused havoc in the world.

According to the World Economic Forum, in the past 20 years, 7348 disasters have been recorded.

These disasters have taken 1.23 million lives. China alone has reported 577 disasters, followed by the US which has 467 and India which has 321.

Major natural disasters this year in India:

Assam Earthquake:

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Assam on April 28, 2021. The natural disaster resulted in 2 deaths and injuries of 12-13 people.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 34 kilometres and 140 kilometres north of Guwahati.

Cyclone Gulab:

Cyclone Gulab was a storm that impacted eastern India on September 24, 2021, in the Bay of Bengal.

Gulab also made landfall in India’s Andhra Pradesh on September 26, 2021, but was weakened.

Over 46,000 individuals were evacuated for safety reasons.

Cyclone Tauktae:

It was a powerful and deadly tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea that made landfall in Gujarat. It started on May 14, 2021.

The storm displaced over 200,000 people and killed 174. Around 80 people are still missing.

Cyclone Yaas:

This cyclone made landfall in Odisha and also had an impact in West Bengal. It was a very strong and damaging cyclone.

Yaas was monitored on May 23, 2021.

Around 20 people in India and Bangladesh died due to the cyclone.

Maharashtra Floods:

Maharashtra saw heavy rainfall on July 22, 2021. Almost 251 people died and over 100 are still missing.

Goa also witnessed the worst flood in decades.

Tamil Nadu Floods:

The flood was caused by heavy rainfall that started on November 1, 2021.

It killed 41 people and over 11,000 people were displaced due to the incessant rainfall.
