As a resident of Palm Desert and a native Californian, I continue to be horrified at how developers get wave parks and Disney’s Cotino approved, but residents in the east valley are still living in trailer parks that don’t have piped or clean well water, negligence that continues to be reported as unfixed for many months!
If Gov. Gavin Newsom is backing desalination, why isn’t he also stopping these flagrantly wasteful wave parks and “desert beachfront” projects?
The Coachella Valley Water District is smug and slick about our valley’s aquifer numbers and persuades city councils and some citizens about how there is close to infinitely abundant water in the aquifer to supply these real estate and entertainment projects.
Cotino’s approved 2018 environmental impact report (EIR) is old and needs to be updated. It’s not enough to merely pay a “fee” to CVWD to replenish the water.
This has the appearance of greedy politics defeating drought and climate change issues. Simultaneously, area residents receive new water conservation requirements that appear to be only suggestions; is that “finding” resources so Disney’s Cotino can have a 24-acre swimmable lake/lagoon?

What teachers should be teaching
In a Your Turn piece on the opinion page of the Aug. 8 edition, Katherine Silveira bemoans the criticism leveled these days at public school teachers which she characterizes as politicizing the public school system.
It is the politicizing of education that some public school teachers are doing themselves that has earned the outrage of thinking parents with their proselytizing on racial issues and sex education, sexual orientation and transgender issues.
The subject of race and gender identity and related sexual subjects are the province of the parents, and the parents alone.
Teachers are supposed to be teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. It really is that simple.
