All of the windows in a city-owned former factory at 575 Piasa St. in Alton have been removed as part of an asbestos abatement project.
John BadmanALTON – Asbestos concerns have been cited for the removal of all glasswork in a former factory building at 575 Piasa St.
According to Alton Building and Zoning Director Greg Caffey, the city-owned building went through an asbestos abatement process after asbestos was found between the widows.
Caffey said there is no demolition scheduled and no current plans to replace the removed glass.
The 57,000-square-foot industrial building, built in the 1950s, was once occupied by Lenhardt Tool & Die Co. The structure has been vacant for a number of years.
In recent years, Alton officials have had problems with homeless individuals breaking into the building and starting fires inside it to stay warm. At least two of those fires had to be extinguished by firefighters.
Some of the windows in the former factory were broken; nearly all had been covered in spray painted graffiti.
