Heavy to very heavy rains to continue over Southeast India
Even after de-intensifying into a deep depression, the system will continue to dump light to moderate rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy showers (64.5 mm-204 mm) at isolated locations across north Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh for the next 24 hours, as per the IMD.

Deep Depression to weaken into Depression by noon
Cyclonic Storm Mandous weakened into a Deep Depression over north Tamil Nadu during the early hours of Saturday, and will gradually weaken into a Depression by Saturday noon.
Having continued its northwestward movement with a speed of 15 kmph, it was located about 70 km northwest of Mamallapuram and 50 km west of Chennai at 5:30 am IST.

As of 7:30 pm today, Cyclonic Storm Mandous was located about 110 km south-southeast of Chennai and 70 km southeast of Mamallapuram (predicted landfall location), as per RMC Chennai.

Damage expected during landfall
According to the IMD, the following damage is possible in north-coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south-coastal Andhra Pradesh during landfall:
- Inundation/localised flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rains.
- Traffic may be disrupted due to poor visibility in association with heavy rain.
- Damage to thatched houses/huts. Unattached metal sheets may fly.
- Minor damage to power and communication lines, which may cause partial disruption in power and communication.
- Major damage to kutcha and some damage to pucca roads. Flooding of escape routes.
- Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of small trees, dead limbs blowing off from trees.
- Damage to paddy, other standing crops and horticulture crops.
- Damage to banana, papaya trees near coastal agriculture due to salt spray.

Tamil Nadu extends holiday for schools, colleges in 8 districts
With cyclone-induced rough weather to continue until tomorrow, the Tamil Nadu Education Department has declared another holiday on Saturday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Ranipet districts.

Shelter homes, response forces readied in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram
Twelve shelter homes have been readied in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district ahead of Cyclone Mandous’ imminent landfall.
In Villupuram district, district collector D. Mohan inspected the coastal areas and told media persons that the district has equipped itself with 12 shelter homes that can accommodate anyone needing safety.
Two teams of SDRF personnel are also ready and stationed at Marakkanam and Kottakapum coasts, while the fire force and disaster response team are all stationed in each district headquarters to be deployed as and when the need arises.

Cyclone Mandous: Intensity update
According to the IMD, Cyclonic Storm Mandous’ wind intensity is likely to be around 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph post 5:30 pm on Friday evening.
But as the cyclone approaches the coast, it will continue to lose steam, and by 11:30 pm Friday, its wind intensity will decrease to 65-75 kmph, gusting to 85 kmph. Mandous is then expected to retain a similar punch when it makes landfall between midnight and early hours of Saturday.

Cyclone Mandous: Location update
Between Friday noon and evening, Cyclonic Storm Mandous continued to move northwestwards and approach India’s southeastern coast at a speed of 14 kmph.
At 2:30 pm today, the cyclone was located over about 250 km north-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 170 km south-southeast of Chennai and 135 km southeast of Mamallapuram (predicted landfall location).

Flights cancelled at Chennai Airport
With Cyclone Mondous approaching the coast, four flights from Chennai stand cancelled.
Tamil Nadu state transport buses will also not ply two hours before the cyclone touches the land and two hours after it, as per a directive from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to the state transport department.

In the past six hours, Cyclonic Storm Mandous has been moving northwestwards across southwest Bay of Bengal at a speed of 10 kmph.
As of 11:30 am, it was located about 230 km north-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 210 km south-southeast of Chennai and 180 km southeast of Mamallapuram (predicted landfall location).

Multiple Andhra districts on heavy rain alert
In view of cyclone-induced heavy to very heavy rains and strong winds, the IMD has placed Andhra’s SPSR Nellore and Chittoor districts on an orange alert for today. The advisory urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough weather.
Moreover, districts Prakasam, YSR Kadapa and Anantapuramu will remain on a yellow watch (‘be aware’ of local weather) for the day owing to the possibility of heavy showers.

South Interior Karnataka districts on alert thanks to Cyclone Mandous
While Mandous’ direct impact will stay restricted to India’s southeastern coast, its influence will also stretch across the western coastal state of Karnataka.
For the next three days (December 9-11), parts of South Interior Karnataka will be in for heavy showers (64.5 mm-115.5 mm). Districts Chikballapur, Kolar, Ramnagara, Shimoga, Chikmaglur, Hassan and Kodagu will be especially prone to intense rainfall.

Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Villupuram under red warning
For the next 24 hours, the IMD has issued a red warning (‘take action’ to stay safe amid extreme weather) over Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Villupuram districts.
Further, the likes of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Ranipettai, Vellore, Thirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore have been placed on an orange alert (‘be prepared’ for rough weather).

Cyclone Mandous to de-intensify within three hours of landfall
As per the IMD’s latest update, the Cyclonic Storm Mandous is very likely to weaken into a deep depression within three hours of landfall. Therefore, no major structural damage is expected in the interior districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Mandous weakens into a Cyclonic Storm
Mandous has de-intensified from a Severe Cyclonic Storm to a Cyclonic Storm at a distance of about 180 km northeast of Karaikal (Puducherry), the IMD has confirmed.
It is now expected to retain this strength until landfall.

For the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh, squally winds with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph will prevail until noon.
The wind speeds will subsequently increase to 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph from Friday noon to evening, and then to 65-75 kmph, gusting to 85 kmph from Friday evening to early Saturday morning.

Storm surge warning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
The IMD has warned of a storm surge of about 0.6 metres height above the astronomical tide during Cyclone Mandous’ landfall over the southeastern coast. This could possibly inundate the low-lying areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The Chengalpattu taluk in TN’s Kancheepuram district is especially vulnerable, as it may witness a strong surge of up to 0.2-0.6 metres and inundation stretching across 0.13 km.

Latest IMD predictions indicate that Cyclone Mandous will make landfall over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts, between Puducherry and Sriharikota, around Mahabalipuram.
The time frame ranges from midnight to the early hours of Saturday, possibly between 11:30 pm tonight and 2:30 am tomorrow.

During the early hours of Friday, Severe Cyclonic Storm Mandous continued its west-northwestward movement over southwest Bay of Bengal at a speed of 13 kmph.
At 5:30 am today, it was located about 230 km east-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 200 km east of Karaikal (Puducherry) and 270 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu).

Mandous’ to remain a Severe Cyclonic Storm until midday
Having strengthened into a Severe Cyclonic Storm last night, Mandous is expected to maintain this intensity until Friday afternoon.
Thereafter, it will gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm yet again, and retain that intensity until it makes landfall over Southeast India post midnight.
