A Palm Desert passive solar home designed to offer protection from the harsh afternoon sun has been listed for $2 million.
Dubbed the “Bunker House,” it has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has been converted into a home theater with a 100-inch LG projection system.
Rancho Mirage Observatory architect Charlie Martin, who died in 2020 at age 80, designed the home for the desert environment. Completed in 1974, the house is built into the slope of a half-acre lot to help cool the interior.
“If it’s 100 degrees outside, it’s 10 to 15 degrees cooler inside without the A/C, even with all that glass,” said Reuben G. Carrillo of The Hamilton Real Estate Group at Coldwell Banker Realty, the co-listing agent.
Glass walls at the rear of the structure back up to a resort-style yard dotted with several one-of-a-kind sculptures installed by a previous owner.
The interior of the home boasts high ceilings, gray granite floors and large windows. A built-in bench anchors the foyer, which splits the step-down living room with a fireplace from the entry-level dining room.
Features of the kitchen include a new Thermador induction cooktop.
On the opposite side of the house is the primary suite, which has a wet room with a large walk-in shower and a soaking tub.
Sliding doors along the rear walls of the home open to the backyard, which features a saltwater lap pool, a spa, an outdoor shower and a built-in barbecue.
The lot also boasts a citrus grove and low-maintenance landscaping.
All-new smart-home automation like lock-and-leave security and control, a two-car garage with a Tesla Wall Connector for electric vehicle charging and separate RV parking add to the offerings.
Carrilo shares the listing with Hamilton Real Estate Group partner Dan Hamilton.
The house at 73009 Joshua Tree Street will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb 18 and 25.
