GAYLORD — The Otsego Conservation District encourages everyone to consider the three Rs of recycling: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce: Try to produce less trash and try reusable food storage containers instead of plastic bags. Use dishcloths or hand towels instead of paper towels. Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste. Choose products with less packaging.
Reuse: Find new ways to reuse items. Plastic grocery bags make great household trash bags. Cut up old bedding or t-shirts to use as rags for cleaning. Donate gently used clothing and household items to a resale store.
Recycle: Drop off your clean, recyclable items at one of the five convenient sites in Otsego County. Recycled items are collected and sorted, then processed to make new materials. Look for the “post-consumer recycled content” label to see if products you buy are made from recycled materials.
The five drop off locations are:
- West: 71 Hayes Tower Road, behind the Hayes Township Hall
- North: 621 Garfield St., Northeast of the Vanderbilt Village Hall
- Central: 931 S. Otsego Ave. near the Merchandise Outlet
- South: 247 Old State Road, across from the Otsego Lake Township Cemetery
- East: 2932 Rock Road, at the Charlton-Chester-Dover Transfer Station
This year’s Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on July 8 at the Otsego County Road Commission, 669 West McCoy Road in Gaylord. Otsego County residents and landowners can dispose of hazardous materials, such as fuel, oil, fertilizer, pesticides, batteries, paint thinner, fluorescent light bulbs, propane cylinders, and more.
Only clean and empty items can be recycled. Be sure to empty and rinse any containers. Dirty items have to be removed from the recycling stream, which makes the process less efficient. Rinsing containers, flattening cardboard boxes, and putting items in the bin loose (not bagging items) are all simple actions that reduce contamination and make recycling more effective. For more recycling tips and a list of accepted items, check out the recycling guide available online at otsegocd.org/recycling.
