Can you go just ONE DAY without your car? Try it on Car Free Day, September 22.
Commuter Connections, the regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, challenges the area’s drivers to park their vehicles for one day a year — and this year, “Car Free Day” is Thursday, September 22.
You won’t be alone in the challenge: Commuter Connections has a long list of transportation alternatives to make it easy to get around, and, best of all, those who pledge to participate in Car Free Day will receive a $30 gift promocode and a 24-hour pass for unlimited 45-minute rides via classic Capital Bikeshare. All who take the pledge will also be entered into a raffle for a Samsung tablet, gift cards to popular restaurants, annual memberships, transit passes and more.
Car Free Day is an international event that heightens awareness of the impact of traffic on the quality of life in the region and is celebrated in more than 2,000 cities in 46 countries.
“Car Free Day is an important event for our region and presents an opportunity for us to come together and reduce our overall traffic congestion by pledging to take alternative transportation modes like riding the bus, Metrorail, or carpooling with friends and family,” said Commuter Connections Director Nicholas Ramfos.
“We encourage everyone to take the pledge to go car free on September 22 and embrace more sustainable ways to travel into the office, school, or anywhere they need to go.”
Any effort to skip driving your car alone is an effort that supports Car Free Day goals: Less traffic and cleaner air. Work from home, shop online, share a ride to work or the movies — there are countless ways to participate. Needless to say, Car Free Day is open to everyone in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan region.
Commute with Confidence
Area commuters are encouraged to telework or travel without driving alone in cars, such as train, bus, bicycle, walking, scooter, or using a carpool or vanpool.
To make going car free easy on Car Free Day and every day, Commuter Connections of Washington offers a free app called incenTrip that helps commuters with multimodal transportation options. As the app is used, it calculates rewards points that can be redeemed for cash incentives through Commuter Connections. The app assists in helping choose travel modes, provides details on best travel times and shows the benefits of best transportation choices.
Get Rewarded
Everyone who takes the pledge will be sent a $30 promocode from Nift (Neighborhood Gift) to spend at local neighborhood businesses and a 24-hour pass for unlimited 45-minute rides via classic Capital Bikeshare. Plus, all who take the pledge will be automatically eligible to win prizes, including a Samsung tablet, gift cards to popular restaurants, annual memberships, transit passes and more!
Already Car Free?
Those who are already reducing the region’s carbon footprint can participate in Car Free Day by taking the pledge and qualifying for promotions and prizes.
To participate, just fill out the pledge form, then go car-free or car-lite (carpool, vanpool) on Thursday, September 22.
