Kochi: Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has dismissed reports of acid rain in Kochi. Acid rain occurs due to rise in the presence of compounds like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the air.
PB Sreelakshmi, environment engineer at PCB, said that the public does not need to worry about acid rain since it is unlikely to occur in Kochi.
Following the fire in Brahmapuram, fake reports and propaganda misconstrued summer rain in Kochi as acid rain. Since Kochi is forecast to receive rainfall in the coming days, the PCB has decided to debunk such propaganda.
“The authorities are analysing water samples collected from Kadambrayar river near Brahmapuram plant. We will receive a report within 15 days and share with the public,” she said.
She also pointed out that smoke released from the fire was swept away due to the wind blowing from the sea.
Several social media posts claimed the presence of acid in a summer shower received in Kochi earlier this week.
