Another school in Philadelphia has closed due to findings of damaged asbestos.
Mastery’s Simon Gratz High School and Gratz Prep Middle School will be closed for the rest of the week due to an asbestos inspection that uncovered damaged asbestos on Wednesday by the School District of Philadelphia, the school announced.
Mastery school officials said virtual learning materials will be provided during the closure and had a list of activities for parents and guardians to keep students learning while at home.
While Simon Gratz H.S. campus is closed, Mastery will offer four meals to families that will be distributed outside the 18th Street side of Mastery Prep Elementary School located at 1801 W. Pike Street on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, from 2-3 p.m.
Both schools will remain closed pending the completion of the inspection, school officials said.
Another update will be given on Friday, March 10 at 4 p.m.
The school district, which performs the reinspection for asbestos every three years, notified the school to close for the duration of the inspection late Tuesday night.
On Monday, students from Building 21, a high school in West Oak Lane, were relocated to Strawberry Mansion High School after asbestos was found in the auditorium that was determined to have been there since June 2021.
The school district provided an update saying the Pennsylvania Department of Education approved a request for students from Building 21 to be switched to virtual learning.
