It truly shocks me how much we contribute to the destruction of the environment daily. Pollution is now a topic we study in school, yet many people still choose to not recycle or to use plastic while knowing how much it endangers the environment. Oil spills from cargo ships spill into the ocean where it enters the bodies of sea creatures and poisons them. I can’t express the concerning numbers of one million dead sea creatures such as turtles, fish, sharks and birds dying from plastic in the ocean per year or 100 million marine creatures dying from plastic waste each year. The animals become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation and drowning. Whole habitats on the seafloor are destroyed by plastic and debris. While this is slightly off topic, it is also relevant, how we cut down trees for more economic use or space but we destroy a habitat each time and deprive the world of another carbon sink. Pollution affects our air quality as well, to the point where in some countries the pollution in the air is visible and toxic to our respiratory systems.
Solutions to reduce plastic usage could be using cloth bags when shopping instead of buying a new plastic bag each time and throwing it away. Use reusable coffee cups, water bottles and metal straws. Use the ecosia search engine to help plant more trees. There are small, simple changes everyone can make that will make a big difference long term. I can’t stress the importance of looking after the earth and its creatures because all lives have equal value so how is it fair for humans to endanger the animals. I encourage everyone to put in place a new system that ensures a safe environment for marine animals as well.
