The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.
Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual “spills” do occur among the 18,000-plus wells in the county.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 18 a historical flowline spill near Weld County Road 104 and 57, about 13 miles northwest of Briggsdale. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned flowline. Three soil samples exceeded COGCC standards for acenaphthene, anthracene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, fluoranthene, fluorene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, pyrene, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 18 a historical well spill near U.S. 34 and Weld 55, about 1 mile northeast of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned wellhead. One soil sample exceeded COGCC protection of groundwater standards for total petroleum hydrocarbons and 1-methylnaphthalene.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 17 a historical flowline spill near Weld 57 and 44, about 9 miles southeast of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned flowline. Two soil samples exceeded COGCC protection of groundwater standards for benzo(a)anthracene and naphthalene.
» VERDAD RESOURCES LLC reported Aug. 15 a recent well spill near Weld 119 and 104, about 13 miles northeast of Keota. Less than 5 barrels of flow back fluid spilled. The well was hit and the water pressure pushed water out of the stuffing box on the well pump. The well was shut in and the spill was contained on the pad. The vac truck recovered water.
» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported Aug. 13 a recent flowline spill near Weld 14 1/2 and Aggregate Boulevard in Frederick. Less than 1 barrel of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. A homeowner found oil leaking out the ground and called the fire department. The department contacted the operator who shut in the well and fenced off the area.
» 8 NORTH LLC reported Aug. 12 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 134 and 89, about 5 miles north of Grover. An unknown amount of oil spilled. The operator found a manway gasket failed on the treater during inspections. The facility was immediately shut in and cleanup began.
» CRESTONE PEAK RESOURCES OPERATING LLC reported Aug. 12 a historical tank battery spill near U.S. 34 and Weld 61, about 6 miles east of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil and condensate spilled. Soil samples were collected during facility and flowline decommissioning. Soil analytical data revealed total petroleum hydrocarbon exceedances at a former above-ground storage tank. Cleanup and investigation of the historical impacts is ongoing.
» PDC ENERGY INC reported Aug. 11 a historical well spill near Weld 388 and 59, about 7 miles southeast of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil and produced water spilled. A subsurface release was found during wellhead decommissioning. The operator is remediating and delineating the impacts.
» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Aug. 9 a historical well spill near Weld 37 and 32, about 6 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following cut and cap at the wellhead. Excavation and assessment is ongoing.
